- How did you get yourself in that situation
- Why didn’t you just leave
- Why didn’t you fight back
- Why didn’t you come forward before
- Why are you saying something different than you said before
- We can’t tell the difference between mental illness and trauma
- We don’t know who is telling the truth
- The accused have rights too
- Why do you have to go to the internet with it
- Why didn’t you file a police report
- Why didn’t you pursue it
- Why do you keep bringing it up
- Why can’t you just let go of the past
- It takes two
- Can’t you just move on
- What did YOU do to HIM
- Well he says different
- You’re saying things he didn’t say
- You need to go heal
- Why don’t you focus on the positive
- Why are you so negative
- Why do you keep harping on the past
- Why didn’t you tell us sooner
- Why didn’t you trust us
- Stay out of it
- Just get over it
- Keep quiet
- It’s not a big deal
- It’s not his fault
- It’s no one’s fault
- Stay down
- Keep your head down
- Keep quiet
- Why didn’t you kill him/them
- I don’t believe you
All things I have heard REPEATEDLY about abuse for decades, the list could go on for infinity. The only appropriate thing to say to an abuse survivor is “It wasn’t your fault.”
